The city is the capital of the province with the same name and belongs to the autonomous community of Andalusia. Almeria is bathed by the Mediterranean Sea and is noteworthy for having a large part of desert territory in the interior, which for decades has been used many times to film Westerns. The population of Almeria does not reach more than 190,000 inhabitants and its economy is based in part on the large number of greenhouses used for growing all kinds of fruits to be sold both at national and European level. The port of Almeria is a major trading point with a constant arrival of cargo ships.
The airport is situated in the outskirts, at a distance of only 10 kilometres to the city. Almeria has two other key destinations nearby: Roquetas de Mar at 23 kilometres and Cabo de Gata at 29 km, both coastal towns with a great tourist attraction during summer.
A walk through the streets and especially the city centre is highly recommended during your visit to Almeria. Note that you should not miss the opportunity to visit the Alcazaba of Almeria, with its courtyards and well-maintained gardens. In 1931 it was declared a historical and artistic monument being recognized as one of the most important Muslim buildings of the Iberian Peninsula; next to the Alcazaba you can visit the Monument of Sagrado Corazon de Jesus which is surrounded by the Wall of Cerro San Cristobal. The Cathedral of Almeria is another great point of interest, as are the former Civil War shelters or the Almeria Archaeological Museum.
The Cable Ingles is a huge and impressive iron structure in the form of railway which was built in 1904; the monument begins in the station and crosses part of the city and reaches into the sea. In the past it was used to load ships much faster, although today it only serves to enrich the visits of tourists having been declared of Cultural Interest in 1998.
The desert of Almeria is famous in the movie world for having served as the perfect setting for many high-level blockbusters as were the filming of Indiana Jones, Last Crusade, Mad Max, Conan the Barbarian, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, etc.
If you travel to this area of Andalusia in search of a sun and beach holiday destination, you'll find it along the whole coast of Almeria. We can mention the following beaches, as the best ones next to the city: Playa de los Muertos, Cala de Monsul, Playa de los Genoveses or Playazo de Rodalquilar.
